1919 The Ingoldsby Legends, or Mirth and Marvels
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Colour Plates, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding
A beautifully illustrated edition of Ingoldsby's work, originally published with Rackham's illustrations in 1898, with the illustrations revised and redrawn in 1907.
Illustrated with twenty-four tipped in colour plates, twelve tinted plates, and further monochrome illustrations, all the work of Arthur Rackham. Collated, complete.
The legends were first printed in 1837 as a regular series in magazine 'Bentley's Miscellany', and due to their popularity were compiled and published in book form. Although based on real legends and mythology, they are deliberately humorous parodies of medieval folklore and poetry.
With a former owner's inscription to the front free endpaper.
A wonderful edition of these tales from the leading figure of the Golden Age of British book illustration.
