The first edition, second state of this work. With the 'A' missing to the running title on page 67. 

In the publisher's original green cloth binding. 

Originally named 'The Laugh' and published serially in Lloyd's Magazine, this novel is set in Marseille in the 1870s during the Third Carlist War. 

The principal theme is a love triangle involving the young narrator of the story, Dona Rita and the Confederate veteran Captain Blunt. 

Condition

In the original green cloth binding. Externally, with discolouration to the spine and fading to the text. With rubbing to the spine head and tail, resulting in small loss of cloth. Damp stains to the boards. Internally, generally firmly bound, with page 175-176 detached but present. Pages are generally bright and clean, with a scattered spotting to the endpapers.
