    Five volumes of a six volume set, lacking volume VI only. The comedies of Aristophanes, an Ancient Greek comic playwright from Athens and a poet of Old Attic Comedy. He wrote a total of forty plays, of which eleven survive virtually complete today. Known as "The Father of Comedy" and "the Prince of Ancient Comedy", Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. This set contains: Volume I - The Acharnians & The Knights. Volume II - The Cloud & The Wasps. Volume III - The Peace & The Birds. Volume IV - The Lysistrata & The Thesmophoriazusae. Volume V - The Frogs. With a translation into corresponding meters, introduction, and commentary by Benjamin Bickley Rogers, an English classical scholar.

    Condition

    In the original cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with the odd mark to the boards. Front hinge tender to volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light spotting to the foredge. Minor age toning to the endpapers with a contemporary ink inscription to the front pastedown. Bookseller's label to the front pastedown of volume III. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
