A bright set of works containing Archibald Thorburn's plentiful ornithological study of British birds.
Complete in four volumes of mixed editions.
Thorburn was best known for his detailed and evocative illustrations of British wildlife, painting mostly in watercolour. By the age of thirty, he was regarded as the best wildlife artist Britain had seen, and more prints have been produced of his work than of any other.
Volumes I-III are illustrated with twenty coloured plates, including a frontispiece. Volume IV is illustrated with twenty two colour plates, including a frontispiece.
The entirety of this set includes:
Volume I - Fourth edition.
Volume II - Fourth edition.
Volume III - Third edition.
Volume IV - Third edition.
With detailed commentary regarding each species' habitats, nests, diets and characteristics.
Collated, complete.
Condition
Uniformly bound in the original red cloth. Externally, very smart. With slight rubbing and bumping to the extremities, most notably to the spines. Marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. With offsetting and spotting to the endpapers. There is occasional scattered spotting, mainly concentrated to the leaves facing the coloured plates. Plates are unaffected.
