Scarce work. Dated from the British Library. A complete set of twenty-five coloured sheets of maps to cover the entirety of England and Wales. Collated complete. Three miles to one inch. Published by W. & A.K. Johnston, one of the major map publishing houses of the 19th century. William Johnston, who became Lord Provost of Edinburgh, and his brother Alexander Keith Johnston, the official Geographer-Royal for Scotland in 1843, originally trained as engravers, and founded the firm in 1826.
Condition
Bound in half calf with brown boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Loss to the spine. Internally, generally firmly bound. Sheet three has partially detached and may come loose with further handling. Some small closed tears have been sympathetically repaired with tape. Approx. 9" tear to sheet 13 with no repairs. Warrington Municipal Museum stamp to the odd page. Bookplate to front pastedown.
