First UK edition. Very scarce work. Illustrated with a frontispiece, fifteen plates, and five maps, three of which are folding. Collated complete. Detailing the history of the Mongolian invasion of Japan, or Ghenko, which took place between 1274 and 1281. The defeat of the invaders was attributed by many to divine intervention and the failed invasions set a limit to Mongolian expansion, defining the history of Japan. An important historical work, this volume provides an account of one of the first conflicts to use gunpowder as a weapon outside of China. Written by Nakaba Yamada. With an introduction from Lord Armstrong.
Condition
In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound with the odd plate loosening slightly. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light age toning to the endpapers with the previous owner's bookplate to the front endpaper and the bookseller's label to the front pastedown.
