Description

Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding

The scarce second edition of May Byron's Pot-Luck of The British Home Cookery Book, published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1915. First published in 1914.

In the publisher's original cloth, with an inlaid cover design to front board. An original advertisement of The Ideal Home Cookery Books acts as the frontispiece. Offered as a prize to a student of St. James's Sunday School.

Byron advocates "good plain cooking" that was prepared by mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers. Byron goes out of her way to avoid tinned ingredients and preservatives that became more popular in the lead-up to and during the First World War. A poet and writer, Byron was most famous for providing the abridgements of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan books.

In her work, Byron collects 1097 home cooked recipes from across Britain. Not only does Byron write the instructions for each recipe, but she also states where each recipe originated from, or from what time period it was first cooked.
