First edition. Illustrated with nineteen tipped in colour plates, and one tipped in photographic portrait of Dulac. Collated complete. Published for the French Red Cross, to whom the profits from sales of the work were donated, this volume includes fairy tales such as Cinderella, Sinbad the Sailor, Blue Beard, and many others. Written and illustrated by Edmund Dulac, a French-British illustrator remembered for his illustrations to works of classic literature, as well as designing banknotes and postage stamps during World War II, most notable of which were those that heralded the beginning of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. Dated from the British Library.

Condition

In the original pictorial cloth binding. Externally, sound with rubbing and light fraying to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the boards. A 1" split in the cloth to the front joint with small splits to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with with odd small spot or handling mark. Age toning to the endpapers and minor spotting to the first and last few pages. A 6" closed tear to page 31/32. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper dated 1918.
