First edition. Illustrated with a photogravure frontispiece, four coloured plates, one double page plate, thirty-one images across twenty-seven plates, and a facsimile journal. Collated complete. A record of the voyages of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, a British Royal Navy officer and explorer who led two expeditions to the Antarctic regions: the Discovery expedition of 1901–04 and the Terra Nova expedition of 1910–13. With reference to his journeys, discoveries of the expeditions, biographical commentary, and the last march, along with records of the search party and farewell letters. Written by Charles Turley, an English writer best known as an author of light fiction and adventure books for boys. With an introduction from Sir James Matthew Barrie, a Scottish novelist and playwright, best remembered as the creator of Peter Pan. Barrie was godfather to Scott's son Peter, and was one of the seven people to whom Scott wrote letters in the final hours of his life during his expedition to the South Pole, asking Barrie to take care of his wife Kathleen and son Peter.
Condition
In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot, light spotting to the fore-edge. Minor age toning to the endpapers with a contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper and pencil inscription to the front pastedown.
