First edition. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, seven colour plates, and many in-text and full-page monochromatic images. Collated complete. A historical commentary on the British Royal Navy, with chapters on the ships of the old times, Queen Bess's Sea Dogs, Blake and the Dutch, the struggle for sea power, the Battle of the Baltic, steam in the Navy, the Russian War, and more. Written by Ernest Hanley Protheroe, a British teacher and prolific author of fiction and non-fiction. Dated from the British Library.

Condition

In the original blue cloth binding. Externally, sound with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and boards with the odd small mark to the cloth. Small splits in the cloth resulting in minor fraying to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd handling mark. Light age toning to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper.
