In a full tree calf prize binding, with the emblem of Derby Municipal Secondary School stamped in gilt to the front board. With additional decorative gilt to the boards and spine.
Comprising the works of Matthew Arnold, the son of English educator and historian Thomas Arnold, the famous Head Master of Rugby School.
Arnold is sometimes called the third great Victorian poet, along with Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and Robert Browning, with poems of his included here such as 'The Strayed Reveller', 'Alaric at Rome' and 'Horatian Echo'.
With an introduction by prolific novelist Arthur Quiller-Couch.
Condition
Bound in full tree calf, with decorative gilt to the boards and spine. Externally, smart, with fading to the spine leather and a minor crack to the head of the joints. With a charming contemporary prize bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with a few spots to the endpapers.
