First published in 1885, this is a charming early 20th century limited edition of Pater's work. Complete in two volumes.
One of 1000 copies printed on hand-made Riccardi paper, with these volumes being out of series.
In the scarce publisher's original dust wrappers, price unclipped.
A historical and philosophical novel set in 161–177 AD, in the Rome of the Antonines. It explores the intellectual development of its protagonist, a young Roman named Marius, and his pursuit of an appealing religion or philosophy.
With the inscription 'To Professor Fraser, with grateful thoughts from L. M. C[indistinguishable], 1934' to the front free endpaper of volume I, and Fraser's name to the front free endpaper of volume II.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth backed, paper covered boards, with unclipped dust wrappers. A touch of shelf wear to back strip tail, with small bump to fore edge of front board of volume II, otherwise externally excellent. Inscriptions to front free endpaper. Back strips significantly age toned, with loss to back strip head of volume II, and minor losses to back strip tails. Small tape reinforcement to head of volume I back strip reverse. Pencil marks to prices at tail of dust wrapper front wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
