The first trade edition, first issue in quarter cloth. Illustrated with a tipped-in colour frontispiece, and twenty-three tipped-in colour plates. Collated, complete. An anthology of beautiful fairy tales for children, including 'Minon-Minette', 'Felicia', 'The Twelve Dancing Princesses', 'Rosanie', 'The Man Who Never Laughed', 'John and the Ghosts', and 'The Czarina's Violet'. Retold here by Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch, a British writer. Illustrations by Kay Rasmus Nielsen, a Danish illustrator who was popular during the Golden Age of Illustration. This was his first English commission, but Nielsen soon became known for his collaborations with Disney for whom he contributed many story sketches and illustrations, not least for Fantasia.
Condition
In the original quarter cloth with paper covered boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Splits in the cloth to the joints resulting in light fraying and the spine lifting slightly. Hinges tender. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and the odd small handling mark. Light age toning to the endpapers.
