First edition, second impression. Scarce work. Illustrated with a frontispiece, title vignette, and thirty-one colour plates. Collated complete. A detailed historical account of an imagined daily life in the Holy Land, offering a portrayal of Palestine life, its manners and customs, and natural features. With chapters on shepherd and sheepfolds, the evening meal, an olive yard, the Jaffa Gate of Jerusalem, and the oriental cafe culture, amongst others. Written by James Neil, a British chaplain, formerly Incumbent of Christ Church, Jerusalem. With illustrations from English painters and artists James Clark, J. Macpherson-Haye, and S. B. Carlill.

Condition

In the original full cream cloth. Externally, smart with light wear to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Minor fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with scattered spotting. Creasing to pages 1-4. With the previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
