Taine’s Essais de critique et d’histoire gathers his seminal essays on French literature, history, and cultural analysis with reflections on writers such as Racine, La Fontaine, and contemporary historians.
Hippolyte Taine (1828–1893) was a major French critic, historian, and philosopher, best known for his deterministic view of culture, summed up in the triad of race, milieu, moment. He influenced both naturalist writers like Zola and historians of the later 19th century.
Condition
Bound in a quarter morocco binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, very smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in very slight loss to morocco and cloth. One or two very minor handling marks to boards. Spine slightly faded with rubbing. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with one or two spots to fore edge.
