Part of Nelson's pocket-sized classics series.

Complete in four volumes, being two volumes of 'The Pickwick Papers' and two volumes of 'Martin Chuzzlewit'.

'Martin Chuzzlewit', undated, dated 1913 from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library. Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume. Twelve pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of Volumes I and II.

‘Martin Chuzzlewit’ is about the eponymous Martin, who goes against his grandfather’s wishes and falls in love with an orphaned girl, intending to marry her. As a result, Martin is disinherited.

'The Pickwick Papers', undated, dated 1920 from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library. Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume. Four pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of Volume I, and six pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of Volume II.

The novel is a sequence of loosely connected adventures and characters, occurring between 1827 and 1828. The character Sam Weller became well known for his popular humour.

Charles Dickens has become one of the most famous authors of all time, with his Victorian novels being read world-wide by people of all ages. He begun life working as a journalist, before starting the serial publication of 'The Pickwick Papers', which earned him instant success.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth bindings, in the original unclipped dustwrappers. Externally, fine. Tail of the spine of 'Pickwick' Volume II with a small amount of wear. Front hinge of 'Pickwick' Volume I is weak. Prior owner's pencil inscription to the recto to the front endpaper of 'Pickwick' Volume I. Dustwrappers with light edgewear, resulting in some small chips. A few faint marks to the wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned and clean.
