Palmer, also known as the Rugeley Poisoner or the Prince of Poisoners, was a doctor who was found guilty of murder, called by Dickens as "the greatest villain that ever stood in the Old Bailey".
The case, detailed fascinatingly in this volume, was one of the most notorious cases of the nineteenth century. Palmer was convicted for the 1855 murder of his friend, John Cook, whom he had poisoned with strychnine. He was suspected of poisoning numerous other people, including his brother, mother-in-law, and four of his children.
Palmer was executed by hanging on the 14th June 1856, with an audience of approximately 30,000 people.
