A first edition of this very scarce and nostalgic work on the railways of the south-east and south coast of England, with lovely colour plates and illustrations. Part of the series 'Peeps at Great Railways'. Sketch map of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway to the front paste down and front free endpaper. Sketch map of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway to the rear paste down and rear free endpaper. 8 colour plates. 27 small illustrations of trains and places accompany the text. Collated complete. This fascinating work discusses the railway and provides a light history of the south-east and south coast of England, with mentions of the Romans, Canterbury pilgrims and various castles and sea-ports. Geraldine Edith Mitton was an English novelist, biographer, editor and guide-book writer. She also wrote another book from this series on the north-eastern and great northern railways. 8 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear, with the header 'Beautiful Books for Boys & Girls with illustrations in colour similar to those in this volume'.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart, with small stains and bumps to the front board. Slight wear to the head and tail of the spine, to the front joint, and to the extremities. Minor ink stain to the back board. Internally, binding is slightly strained. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional handling mark. Colour plates are unusually bright.
