'The Pickwick Papers' was Dickens' first novel. Originally written in a serial form, the work is a sequence of loosely related adventures in 1827-8. The leader of the 'Pickwick Club' decides that he and his fellows should go and explore places remote from London, and to report their findings. Charles Dickens is one of the most popular authors of the Victorian age. His novels show the grimy side of poverty and prosperity in Victorian England, showing poor social conditions alongside repulsive characters. Illustrated by Frank Reynolds. Reynolds was a British artist who also illustrated editions of 'David Copperfield', and 'The Old Curiosity Shop', and well as contributing illustrations to 'Punch', 'The Illustrated London News', and 'London Magazine.
