Description

Fine Binding, First Edition, Leather Binding, Signed Binding

The first edition, first impression of this uncommon work.

British civil servant and historian Charles Prestwood Lucas presents a comparative historical study that examines the parallels between the expansion of the Roman Empire and the growth of the British Empire.

Lucas considers the political organisation of each empire alongside their administration, law, and military power, as well as the cultural and moral influences exerted by each empire on its peoples.

With the bookplate of S. C. Lister of Swinton Park to the front pastedown. Samuel Cunliffe Lister, 1st Baron Masham, was an English industrialist and inventor best known for creating the “Lister nip comb,” which revolutionised the processing of wool, and for transforming Bradford into a major textile centre.
