Description

Publishers' Original Binding

George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was an Irish playwright, with his most renowned works including 'Man and Superman', 'Pygmalion' and 'Saint Joan'; he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925. He was influenced by the realism of Henrik Ibsen's plays, injecting social, political and moral meanings into his works. He penned over sixty plays. 

This collection was owned by Sir Bernard Oppenheimer, 1st Baronet (1866-1921), a South African-British diamond merchant and philanthropist. 

Some volumes are bound with publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original binding.

Volume I of 'Plays: Pleasant and Unpleasant' contains a frontispiece illustration of the author.

'The Perfect Wagnerite' (1913), a piece of music criticism.

Condition

In a full cloth binding. Externally very smart, minos shelf wear only, with bumping to the head and tails of the spine, a chip to the head of 'The Doctor's Dilemma'. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume, pencil inscription to 'The Apple Cart'. Internally firmly bound, pages generally bright and clean, page unopened in Cashel Byron's Profession (ix-xii), minor offsetting opposing the frontispiece in volume I of 'Plays: Pleasant and Unpleasant'.
