Description

Colour Plates, Illustrated

Eleven vibrant fashion plates from the Gazette du Bon Ton, a small but influential fashion magazine published in France from 1912 to 1925

The star of the Gazette was its fashion illustrations. Each issue featured ten fashion plates (seven depicting couture designs and three designed solely by the illustrators).

The prints feature dramatic pochoir colouring, which is created when single layers of colour is added by hand to a lithograph using a stencil.

Present here are:

No. 1, 1912, plate IV, by Bernard Boutet de Monvel
No. 2, plate II, by Maurice Taquoy
No. 5, Mars 1913, plate I, by Georges Barbier
No. 5, Mars 1913, plate II, by J. Goje
No. 6, Avril 1913, plate I, by Bakst.
No. 6, Avril 1913, plate IX
No. 10, Aout 1913, plate V, by Georges Barbier
No. 11, Septembre 1913, plate IV by Georges Barbier
No. 12, Octobre 1913, plate III, by Ludwik Strimpl
No. 12, Octobre 1913, plate X, by Georges Barbier
No. 1, Fevrier 1920, plate III

Including two text leaves from issue 1 from 1912, with four colour vignette illustrations across these four leaves.

The magazine employed celebrated Art Deco artists who, rather than simply drawing models in clothing, sought to depict their figures in dramatic and narrative situations.
