A scarce first edition.
The work of novelist and travel writer Charlotte Mansfield, known for her planned 1909 "Cape to Cairo" journey.
Former owner's inscription, dated 1911, to the front free endpaper.
Illustrated with over one hundred vignette photographic illustrations, and one map. Collated, lacking one map.
In reviewing this travelogue, The Register of Adelaide commented, "a less fitting person to follow in the steps of Mary Kingsley could hardly be imagined."
Dated 1911 via the British Library.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding, with pictorial onlay to front board. Two chips to perimeters of onlay. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with fading to back strip. Rear joint starting, with board tenderly held. Front hinge strained, with board tender. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, binding strained throughout, and most tender to the first third. Pages clean and bright, but with handling marks to perimeters of first through leaves. Lacking one map.
