The first edition of Edward Smith's biography of Banks, a patron of the natural sciences known for his exploration of Botany Bay, and his presence on the voyage of the HMS Endeavour.
Illustrated with a photogravure frontispiece, and sixteen further plates. Collated, complete.
With a signed letter - on the letterhead of the Linnean society - tipped in to the front free endpaper, dated 1918, and addressed to one Mr George Clinch. The author of the letter thanks Clinch for a book, and continues 'I beg your acceptance of the volume here sent; though not written by me, I had a good deal to do with its composition, such as placing my notes at the author's disposal. I found that my own volumes are all too technical, while this may prove to contain some pages of interest to you'.
With a sixteen page publisher's catalogue to the rear, and tipped in errata leaf.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with fading to spine. Boards bright. Rear hinge lightly strained, but firmly held. Letter tipped in to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd spot or marginal pencil notation.
