A interesting look into the life and society of sailors. With introductory chapters by the author and naval historian John Leyland. Written by the Naval Commander, Charles Napier Robinson. After a career in the Royal Navy, Robinson turned his hand to writing, and would eventually start the Society for Nautical Research. With a continued passion for the navy, it is apt much of Robinson literary works centre on the navy and naval history. Robinson oversaw the publication of Brassey's Naval & Shipping Annual and numerous other notable important maritime works. Illustrated with numerous reproductions of prints, engravings and woodcuts. Collated complete. Previous owner ink inscription to the front pastedown and endpaper.
Condition
In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally bumping to the head and tail of the spine, with loss to the head of the spine. Light bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine. Small white mark to the head of the front board. Front and rear hinges are lightly strained. Two ink inscriptions, one to the front pastedown and a second to the front endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with the very occasional mark.
