A series of six lectures exploring the recorder and flute and its place in literature, an interesting musical piece of literary criticism.

Lectures are titled 'Literary Errors on the Subject of the Recorder', 'Tone and Effect of the Recorder', 'Hamlet and the Recorder', 'Shakespeare's Allusions to Flutes and Pipes', 'Milton on Flutes and Flute-Players', and 'The Temple-Flute-Player and the Tomb-Piper'.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, and in-text engravings throughout. Collated, complete.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, a little rubbed. Minor bumping to the extremities. Spine is faded. A few light marks to the cloth. Hinges are starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with the occasional scattered spot and handling mark. The occasional ink line to the margins. Pages 23 to 26 are detached but present. Chips to the margins of pages 429 to 432, with no loss of text.
