A biographical and musical study of the prolific German composer, Johann Sebastian Bach, from German-born, French polymath Albert Schweitzer. 

With commentaries on the roots of Bach's art, nature and character, his cantatas, musical languages and much more.

With three illustrations to Volume I and two illustrations to Volume II. Collated, complete. 

Schweitzer received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of "Reverence for Life" and influenced the Organ Reform Movement. 

With the bookplates of Sir Humphrey Brunel Noble, 4th Baronet of Walwick Hall, Northumberland to the front pastedowns and front free endpapers of both works.

With a contemporary Latin ink inscription dated 1913 to the verso of the front free endpaper.

Condition

Uniformly bound in signed half vallum by The Times Book Club, with cloth boards. Externally, very smart. With spotting to the vellum and minor rubbing to the extremities. Dust dulling to the spines and with a bookplate of one Humphrey Noble to the front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot to the endpapers. Bookplate of one Sir Humphrey Noble to the front free endpapers. With a contemporary Latin ink inscription to the verso of the front free endpaper to Vol I.
