The first Brickdale illustrated edition of 'Idylls of the King', a cycle of twelve narrative poems by the English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Poet Laureate from 1850 until his death in 1892.
In the original decorative blue cloth binding.
Beautifully illustrated with colour plates by Eleanor F. Brickdale, a British artist and late exponent of Pre-Raphaelitism. Her illustrations are characterised by detailed, stylised figures, often with flowing lines and decorative elements.
With twenty-one tipped-in colour plates, including a frontispiece. Collated, complete. One plate, 'But to be with you...' is incorrectly stated as facing page 181 instead of 118.
'Idylls of the King' retells the legend of King Arthur, his knights, his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him, and the rise and fall of Arthur's kingdom.
Condition
In the original decorative cloth binding. Externally, smart, with rubbing to the extremities, most notably to the spine head and tail. With a minor damp spot to the rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with lightly scattered spots throughout. Offsetting to the endpapers.
