A satirical and richly illustrated portrayal of British colonial life in India, depicting the routines, pretensions, and eccentricities of a typical Anglo-Indian “station.” It captures scenes of military, domestic, and social life, from mess dinners to tiger shoots, offering both caricature and commentary on empire-era society.
Captain George Francklin Atkinson (1822–1859) was a British officer in the Bengal Engineers and a talented illustrator and writer.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in very slight loss to loth. Slight rubbing to boards. The odd minor handling mark to boards. Previous owner's ink inscription to front paste down, dated 1944. Internally, fully disbound, in need of sympathetic repair. Pages bright and clean. Slight rubbing to fore edges, occasionally resulting in one or two small closed tears and creases, notably to the frontispiece.
