Illustrated with forty-nine colour plates. The frontispiece of Norham Castle at Sunrise is fully disbound, with the tipped in plate loosely inserted. Collated, complete.
A biography of Joseph Mallord William Turner. Turner wasa popular Romantic painter, known for his watercolour landscapes, and imaginative uses of colour. He was a child prodigy, exhibiting his first work at the Royal Academy of Arts when he was 15. He was intensely private, and avoided the attractions of fame. He was also controversial, never marrying, but having two daughters by his housekeeper.
Written by Charles Lewis Hind. Hind was an editor, art historian, and journalist. He was the editor of 'The Academy', and also contributed to the 'Daily Chronicle'. His other works include 'The Diary of a Looker-on', 'The Consolations of a Critic', 'The Post Impressionists', and more.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. One or two slight handling marks to boards. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Slight soiling to rear board. Slight cockling to joints of spine. Slight offsetting to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Frontispiece page lacking, with tipped in colour plate loosely inserted. Pages bright and clean. Scattered spotting to first and last few leaves, with the odd spot throughout, heavier to fore edge.
