A limited edition of this work, of which only three hundred and fifty numbered and signed copies where printed, one hundred reserved for sale in America. This copy is numbered one hundred and ninety-nine. Signed by the artist and bound in the original publisher's full vellum binding.
A comedy by the bard of Avon, William Shakespeare, originally published in 1602 allegedly at the request of Queen Elizabeth I. The story is set during the reign of Henry V, and features the character of Sir John Falstaff who appeared in Henry IV, as he decides to court two wealthy married women.
This edition is illustrated by Hugh Thomson with numerous decorations in black and white throughout, as well as forty full page coloured plates. Collated, complete.
Condition
In the original publisher's full vellum binding. Externally sound with some shelf wear and marking to the boards, general light soiling. The hinges are slightly strained, holding firm. Internally, the volume is firmly bound. Light spotting to the occasional leaf, although, generally, the pages are bright and clean throughout. With a staining mark to the lower right corner of p.23, bleeding through the few adjacent leaves, not affecting any of the text or illustrations. Illustrated with numerous decorations in black and white throughout, as well as forty full page coloured plates. Collated, complete. The coloured plates are protected with tissue guard, that to p. 10 and 16 with a minor closed tear.
