In this work, Jefferies provides a guide to the wildlife of Wiltshire, in its villages, farmhouses, orchards, woodlands, fields, and lakes, and also on the Wiltshire Downs. He gives particular mention to bird life, with passages devoted to starlings, rooks and rookeries, migration, and wildfowl.
