Illustrated with forty tipped in colour plates by Thomson, each with captioned tissue guards. Collated, complete.
Thomson was a celebrated illustrator known for his pen and ink illustrations of classic works of literature, remembered for inaugurating the Cranford School of Illustration with his edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's work of the same name.
With the bookplate of T & M James to the front pastedown.

Condition
In the publisher's original vellum binding, with gilt detailing. Externally, significantly age toned. Significant rubbing to centre of rear board. Handling marks to boards. Lacking silk ties. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned to perimeters, otherwise bright. Instances of light handling marks throughout, with the odd area of spotting to gutters.
