A 1858 collection of three short stories, published in book form, being the first of her works to be released under the famous pseudonym George Eliot. Each of the Scenes concerns a different Anglican clergyman, but is not necessarily centred upon him. With the titles: The Sad Fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton, Mr. Gilfil's Love Story, and Janet's Repentance. Written by Mary Ann Evans, known by her pen name George Eliot, an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator, and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson, an Irish illustrator known for his pen-and-ink illustrations of works by authors such as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie. Bound by Hatchards, Piccadilly.
Condition
Bound in half calf with cloth covered boards. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd small spot or handling mark. School prize bookplate to the front pastedown. Bound by Hatchards, Piccadilly.
