First edition. Illustrated with a colour tipped in frontispiece and fifteen colour tipped in plates. Collated complete. A detailed volume dedicated to British sports up to the twentieth century, providing a history and descriptions on sports such as hunting, fishing, racing, steeple-chasing, and more. Compiled in pursuance of a suggestion that extracts from the works of old writer on sport, with passages of modern authorities, would be of interest to contemporary sportsmen. Written by E. D. Cuming, a British writer and journalist. Illustrated by George Denholm Armour, a British painter and illustrator who made hundreds of illustrations for The Graphic, Punch and Country Life, most connected with horses and riding. His work was part of the art competitions at the 1928 Summer Olympics, the 1932 Summer Olympics, and the 1948 Summer Olympics. Previously held in the library of John Kenneth Foster of Egton Manor in Cleveland, Yorkshire. Egton Manor is an historic country house near the village of Egton Bridge, on the banks of the River Esk in the North Yorkshire Moors, built in 1869 by the Foster family, whose descendants still live there today.
Condition
In the original full red cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. The odd small mark to the cloth. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light age toning to the endpapers with the previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
