Containing the first, second, third and fourth series of this work. Written by James Anthony Froude, an English historian, novelist, biographer, and editor of Fraser's Magazine. Froude's historical writings were often fiercely polemical, earning him a number of outspoken opponents, and he continued to be controversial until his death. This set contains essays on subjects such as: The Science of History, The Influence of the Reformation on the Scottish Character, Calvinism, Ireland Since the Union, Sea Studies, Party Politics, Origen and Celsus, and The Oxford Counter-Reformation, amongst many others. Bound in full calf. Externally, very smart with minor wear to the extremities. Fading to the spine with minor fading to the board edges. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. School prize bookplate to the front pastedown. Bound by Howell, Liverpool.
