First edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece, seven plates, and five folding maps. Collated complete. A detailed account of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a major uprising against the rule of the British East India Company, which functioned as a sovereign power on behalf of the British Crown. With commentary from the early days and the causes of the revolt, through to the attack of Ghazis near Bareli and the conclusion of the conflict. Written by Field Marshal Sir Henry Evelyn Wood, a British Army officer who served in several major conflicts including the Indian Mutiny where, as a lieutenant, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
Condition
In the original full red cloth binding. Externally, sound with light bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot. A few small tears or creases to the page edges. Contemporary ink inscription and book depot sticker to the front endpaper.
