Adorned throughout by British artist Ella Du Cane, best known for her watercolours of landscapes and exotic locales. Collated, complete with a colour frontispiece and forty-nine colour plates.
Described here are the flowers and gardens of Japan, including the distinctive uses of ornaments, stones and fences, landscape gardens, temples, blossoms, lotuses and more.
Written by sister of the artist, Florence Du Cane. Ella and Florence were two of the children of Sir Charles Du Cane and his wife Georgiana, the granddaughter of the Anglo-American painter John Singleton Copley.
Condition
In the original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with slight rubbing and bumping to the extremities, most notable to the spine head. Damp stain to the rear board and a few faint marks to the cloth. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with light scattered spots and offsetting to the endpapers and spotting to the margin affecting the occasional page.
