The first edition of the Red-Cap Adventures, the Second Series of the Red-Cap Tales, written by Samuel Rutherford Crockett. A children's adaptation of tales from Sir Walter Scott's Waverly novels. Published by Adam and Charles Black in 1908. First published in 1904.

In the publisher's original pictorial cloth, with an illustrated frontispiece by Allan Stewart, a Scottish painter known for romantic, historical and military works. Contains all other 16 illustrations by Stewart of Medieval scenes from the novel. Collated complete.  

Contains original advertisements of various works, including illustrated novels, books by Ascott R. Hope, Crockett and Sir Walter Scott's The Waverly Novels. This particular book was awarded as a gift for a pupil of Laurieston Public School.

'Stolen from the Chest of the Wizard of the North (Scott), Crockett's book is an entertaining children's version of Scott's medieval romances, including Ivanhoe, The Fortunes of Nigel, Quentin Durward and The Pirate. Alongside Crockett's witty writing are charming illustrations from Scott's tales.



Condition

In the publisher's original pictorial cloth. Externally, generally smart. Signs of fading with the odd mark. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Back board and spine have detached from hinge. End papers are generally bright and clean, with minimal spotting to extremities. A book plate to front paste down and a gift inscription to front free-end paper. Internally, firmly bound. A chip to right edge of leaves pp.269-272. Pages are generally bright and clean, with signs of browning to bottom-right corner of plate p.146.
