A fine, leather bound, thirteenth impression of this collection of work from Victorian poet and cultural critic, Matthew Arnold. Arnold (1822 – 1888) has been characterised as a ‘sage writer’; one who chastises and instructs the reader on social issues. Containing his most notable works including ‘Thyrsis’, ‘Dover Beach’, and ‘The Scholar-Gipsy’. Including a frontispiece of the author. Note from previous owner in ink to front endpaper: “Darling, Happy Birthday, All My Love, Sara. 18.5.1976”.
Condition
In a full calf binding with gilt title and decoration to the spine. Externally, very appealing with just some fading to the spine. Very minor rubbing to the extremities. Marbled paper to pastedowns and endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Signed by previous owner in ink on endpaper.
