First edition. Illustrated with fifty colour plates and eight black-and-white in-text images. Collated complete. A biography of John Pettie, a Scottish painter who spent most of his career in London and became a member of the Royal Academy in 1866 and a full academician in 1874. Renowned for his heroic and historical scenes of Scottish history with their rich colour palettes, Peattie was one of the best known British artists of his day. Written by Martin Hardie, an English painter, printmaker, writer and museum curator.

Condition

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine and board edges with the odd small mark to the cloth. Hinges starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and age toning to the endpapers.
