The first edition of Gaston Migeon's In Japan: Pilgrimages to the Shrines of Art, translated from French-English by Florence Simmonds. Published by William Heinemann in 1908.

In the publisher's original decorative green cloth, with antique-laid paper. Contains a frontispiece of Buddhist bodhisattva Fugen Bosatsu, and all other 59 illustrations of Japanese and Buddhist culture on plates throughout. Collated complete.

Also contains original advertisements of other works on Japan from the publishers, such as Kakemono by J.H. Edwards.

A French art historian and curator at the Louvre, Migeon approaches his study of Japanese art and culture with scholarly fascination. As a reader, we follow his travels across different temples, museums and monuments in the country, such as The Imperial Palace in Kyoto.

Travelling to the country in the years following the Meiji Restoration, Migeon wishes to explore how modern Japanese culture considers their past and whether it will reveal to the West its beauty.

Condition

In the publisher's original decorative green cloth. Externally, very smart with minimal handling marks. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Fading to the spine. Offsetting to free end papers. An ink signature from previous owner and a bookplate to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot, heaviest to central leaves. Plates are clean.
