The first edition of this work.

Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, and two-hundred and fifty vignette and full page photographic images captured by the author, American ornithologist Frank Michler Chapman.

In this work, completed over the course of seven years, Chapman presents a comprehensive study of the habits of North American birds, 'designed to illustrate not only the habits and haunts of the birds shown, but also the country in which they live'.

With a former owner's inscription, dated 1909, to the front free endpaper.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Fading to back strip, with boards bright. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Inscription to front free endpaper. Frontispiece detached to head, otherwise, internally firmly bound. Minor loss to frontispiece, resulting in offsetting to title page. Pages otherwise clean and bright.
