Widely believed to have been written between 1590 and 1592, 'The Taming of the Shrew' is a comedy play depicting the courtship of Petruchio and Katherina; over the course of the play, Petruchio 'tames' Katherina in order to make her a compliant and docile bride, using psychological cruelties such as not allowing her to eat or drink. It has been widely adapted across opera, stage, screen and ballet.
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) remains one of the most influential and recognisable figures in the history of English literature, seen as the world's greatest dramatist. His work consists of thirty-nine plays, over one hundred and fifty sonnets and three long narrative poems. His plays continue to be widely studied and adapted across a plethora of forms, and consist of tragedies, such as 'Romeo and Juliet', histories, including his biographies of English Kings such as 'Richard III', and comedies, such as 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.
Containing a bookplate to celebrate the tercentenary of the First Folio of Shakespeare's plays in 1623 printed by the Shakespeare Association and presented by Sir Charles Wakefield.
Condition
In a quarter paper vellum binding. Externally generally smart, with the spine a touch discoloured and bumped at the head and tail, as well as a little bumping to the extremities. Tercentenary bookplate to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are uncut, in some places unopened, and generally bright and clean, with just the odd spot.
