The Menology of Basil II is a Greek illuminated manuscript designed as a church calendar or Eastern Orthodox Church service book, originally compiled c1000 AD for the Byzantine Emperor Basil II. It contains a synaxarion, a short collection of saints' lives, compiled at Constantinople for liturgical use and over four hundred miniature paintings by eight different artists, which was unusual for the era. It currently resides in the Vatican Library, with a full facsimile having been produced in 1907. This volume contains the history of the Menology, a code description, detailed descriptions of the most important miniatures, commentary on the different artists, and more. With an essay on the importance of the Meology, as well as a comprehensive index.
Condition
Bound in quarter calf with paper covered boards. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities resulting in minor loss to the leather. Light loss to the head of the spine and board tips with small cracks to the joints. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd small handling mark.
