Histoire de la Navigation Arienne by W. De Fonvielle. Illustrated with eighty-two engravings integrated with the text, some of which are full page illustrations. [counted, all present] First edition. In French. From the Bibliotheque des coles et des Familles. A history of ballooning and early airships. With chapters on Tiberius Cavello, the death of Pilatre de Rozier, and polar explorations by balloon amongst others. Wilfrid de Fonvielle (1824 - 1914) was a French science writer and balloonist. He published hundreds of articles for technical and scientific journals such as L'Arophile, La Nature, la Revue Scientifique, La Science illustre, and L'lectricit. He was editor of L'Arophile. In 1858 he spent two days in a balloon, and in 1869 he travelled 90 km with Gaston Tissandier in 35 minutes. During the siege of Paris in the Franco-Prussian War, he escaped from the city in a balloon and went to London.
Condition
In a cloth binding. Externally, sound but with some wear to extremities and splitting to cloth to joints, slight marks to boards. Internally, hinges and binding strained in places. With age toning to pages and occasional spotting and small closed tears.
