What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

First published in 1904, this is a later re-issue following a change of publisher.

With the pencil inscription of Ambrose Heal to the front blank, and with a small number of handwritten pencil notations in his had, offering additional context.

Ambrose Heal was a British furniture designer, businessman, and key figure in the Arts and Crafts and Modernist movements. Born into the family that owned Heal’s, the London furniture store, he transformed its reputation by designing simple, functional, pieces that contrasted with the heavy Victorian style then in vogue.

He was also known for collecting London historical ephemera, including records of tradesmen, goldsmiths, calligraphers, signboards and furniture makers.

Illustrated with a frontispiece and sixty-one further photographic images on plates. Collated, complete.

In this work, Simon presents a study of the leading cabinet-makers and designers of Georgian England, including figures such as Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite, Thomas Sheraton, and the Adam brothers.
