The special edition, published for the subscribers. 

Illustrated with monochrome vignettes to all, a coloured multi layered fold out illustration depicting the anatomy of a dog, and six coloured plates to 'Vol I', a coloured frontispiece and seven coloured plates to 'Vol II', a coloured frontispiece and six coloured plates to 'Vol III', and a coloured frontispiece to 'Vol IV'. Collated, complete, with a total of twenty-three coloured plates, matching the list of plates included to each work, but not matching the '21 coloured plates' mentioned on the title page, with this being the extra illustrated special edition.

A four volume complete set. 

A beautifully illustrated work on dogs by Robert Leighton, a Scottish writer who became and expert in dogs. The work covers a variety of dog breeds from terriers, spaniels, Pekinese, wolfhounds, pointers and many more, describing the history of the breed, their personalities and traits, and how to care for them.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth, lacking very scarce dust wrappers. Externally very smart with fading to the spines, with the odd slight marks to the boards, and slight wear to the extremities of the boards. A slight lean to two volumes. The odd spot to the endpapers. Internally firmly bound with bright pages with the odd spot, heavier to the verso of the plates.
