In this charming first edition, first impression, the Psammead advises the children to purchase an ancient Egyptian amulet, with serves as a portal to the past. 

Gore Vidal described the work as 'a time machine story, only the device is not a machine but an Egyptian amulet whose other half is lost in the past. By saying certain powerful words, the amulet becomes a gate through which the children are able to visit the past or future'. He termed it 'a story of considerable beauty'.

With forty-eight full page and vignette illustrations from popular illustrator of children's works, H. R. Millar. Collated, complete.

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Boards bright. Back strip a touch age toned, with light shelf wear to back strip tail. Front joint tail starting, with board firmly held. Rear hinge strained and a touch tender. Pencil inscription to front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.
