In this, Conrad's first work of non-fiction, Conrad bases the stories of the sea upon his own experiences. In 1874, Conrad left Poland to start a merchant-marine career rising to the rank of Captain. Most of Conrad's works of fiction and non-fiction are influenced by his time on the sea with Conrad often borrowing the names of real people he met for the fictional characters he created.
Upon publication, The Mirror Of The Sea was met with much critical acclaim with the second edition published the same year as the first.
